The 2009 Australia Cup was held in Brisbane. It was great to see all States and Territories represented at such a friendly competition. Congratulations to the QLD Team on their outstanding performances at this competition. Our athletes finished 2nd overall with a total of 75 points, behind the winning team from Victoria in 1st place and NSW in 2nd place. Full results can be found below.
Eligibility for the Team
Eligibility for selection in the Queensland Australia Cup Team is limited to those children in the U14 age group who have attended 60% of a Little Athletic Centre’s actual competition days in the season of selection, unless on medical grounds (which is to be supported by a medical certificate) or on compassionate grounds. Once an athlete has nominated for the Team, their Centre will be contacted and asked to fill in the required paperwork before their selection is considered.
The Team
The team is comprised of U14 athletes from QLA, with a maximum of 10 athletes being selected – usually 5 boys and 5 girls. One competitor will be selected for each event and one team selected for each relay. Athletes are not permitted to do more than 3 events (not including the relay). The Queensland Team will also comprise of U18 and Open athletes from Queensland Athletics.
Team Selection
The team will be selected solely on those athletes that have nominated to be part of the Team. Athletes will have to nominate themselves (via the appropriate nomination form) and also list their best performances at various Centre and QLAA sanctioned events. Athletes maybe selected to compete in up to 3 events. Please note that placings at QLAA sanctioned events or being selected as a member of the QLAA State Team (U13) does not guarantee selection in this Team.
The Team will be selected and announced in early January.
Events
The events change from year to year. The 2009 events were as follows:
Girls – 100m, 400m, 800m, 80m Hurdles, High Jump, 4x100m Relay
Boys - 100m, 400m, 1500m, Long Jump, Shot Put, 4x100m Relay
In the Long Jump and Shot Put events, athletes will have four attempts only. In the High Jump event, athletes are allowed four failures total, which can be made at any height.
The Competition
The competition is usually held over one day. The date and venue for the 2010 competition is yet to be finalised. It is a Teams Championship and trophies will be awarded to the winning State for each age group. There is a separate competition for U14 and Open age groups. Trophies will be presented to the winning State / Territory for each age division, as well as an overall trophy to the winning State / Territory.
The competition will be conducted under full IAAF Rules – not Little Athletics modified rules.
Costs
Athletes are required to fully fund themselves if they wish to be part of this Team. Costs will vary depending on where in Australia the Cup is being held.
Uniforms
Athletes will be required to wear the approved uniform for the competition. No exceptions will be made. A competitor number will be given to each athlete.
